OM57 La Punta – Pachacamac “CTI”

Though Callao in general is not a very recommendable place to visit for the average tourist, La Punta is the exception to the rule. On the map of Lima, La Punta is the peninsular part, the appendix so to say. Especially worthwhile is a visit to the Fortress Real Felipe. According to LimaEasy, the fortress is:

[..] Callao’s main attraction. Built over 250 years ago to defend the Peruvian coast and the harbour of Callao from attacks of pirates, it is the biggest and most impressive of all fortresses the Spanish crown erected overseas. Inside its walls, hallways and towers a piece of Peruvian history has survived. Since 1984 the fortress houses the museum of the Peruvian army, the ‘Museo Historico Militar Real Felipe’. Take a guided tour and discover another part of the Peruvian past (it takes about 2½ hours).

EO39 Puente Piedra – Ate “Consorcio Via”

From the beginning, the Consorcio Via has been one of my favorites and it is a definite Ruta Recomendable. It was the first bus line that I encountered that does not have a cobrador, only a driver. In the buses they publish a chart with authorized stops all along the route. This is now copied by the NO101 “Nueva America”. The core of the route of the EO39 is Universitaria – La Marina – Javier Prado. This is one of the main corridors for public transport and on this route, you cannot find a better alternative.

SO16/SO18 San Miguel – San Bartolo

The Green Ruta Recomendable actually consists of two routes operated by the same company, SO16 and SO18. They have the same terminal in San Miguel and they both go to San Bartolo, one of the beach towns south of Lima along the Panamericana Sur. The majority of their route is identical. However, in Pueblo Libre, the SO16 passes through Avenida Bolivar and avenida Brasil, whereas the SO18 goes along avenida Venezuela and avenida Arica. They join hands again at the Plaza Bolognesi in Centro de Lima and from there they continue along avenida Grau and Circunvalacion to the Panamerican Sur all the way to San Bartolo.

The starting point of both is avenida Precursores in the San Miguel district. The first part of the route takes you along the south side of the Parque de las Leyendas. LimaEasy says:

EO122 San Miguel – Chosica “Chosicana”

East of Lima is the town of Chosica. Chosica, with Cieneguilla, is one of the places Limeños go to to catch some sun when the clouds cover Lima. It is a great one-day get-away from the bustle of the city to relax at one of the roadside restaurants that offer barbecue and a swimming pool. This would be the place to eat Pachamanca, a traditional Peruvian dish that is prepared in a hole in the ground. LimaEasy tells us that:

“The district Lurigancho – Chosica is east of the city center in the valley of the River Rimac and is the second largest district of Lima. It’s “capital” is Chosica. Since the Trans-Andean railroad was built in the 19th century Chosica was a fashionable place for resting and partaking in leisure activities. At that time, many aristocratic families from Lima made the place their holiday home. And still today Chosica is a popular get away for Limeños in the winter months.”

NO101 Carabayllo – San Juan de Miraflores “La Nueva America”

The Orange Ruta Recomendable used to be the NM33 line. Recently it has changed code to NO101. According to a cobrador of one of their buses, this is due to fact that since renovating the fleet most of the units are buses and not micros. So they had to apply for a new license, which was granted under a new code but for the same route. This story is probably correct, because their fleet indeed consists almost entirely of new, big buses.

The Nueva America (or Transnasa) is the 3rd important Ruta Recomendable crossing Miraflores (the others are the OM23 and the NO02). The NO101 is crossing Miraflores East-West, through avenida Benavides – Pardo – Ejercito. But essentially this line is a North-South connection between Carrabayllo in the far north and San Juan de Miraflores on the southside of town.

IO06 Ventanilla-Villa Maria

The purple Ruta Recomendable is the one passing Jorge Chavez airport. This Orion combi has a futuristic appearance and is generally riding without cobrador. This means that you will have to pay with the driver upon getting on the bus. Orion is a big player in the Lima combi world. They have many lines, but the quality of the buses varies a lot. Their best line is the IO06, especially because it is passing the airport. All the combis on this line are either the futuristic model or even newer big buses.

From the airport you can take this line to Miraflores, but you will have to change at some point. I suggest to change at Salaverry with Sanchez Carrion (old name: Pershing) and take the NO02 “La Sesosa” from there. Other options include changing at Brasil with La Marina, Javier Prado with Arequipa or Javier Prado with the Via Expresa (but in all cases you will have to walk a bit more between the stops). The total journey might last between 40 minutes and 2 hours, depending on the traffic.

NO01 Puente Piedra-Villa El Salvador “El Chino”

Connecting Puente Piedra in the north with Villa El Salvador in the south of the city, the Red Line is “El Chino”, the NO01. El Chino is running in light blue buses and it is considered to be the fastest north-south connection along the Panamericana.

El Chino starts in Puente Piedra and is passing through Pro in Los Olivos until reaching the Panamericana Norte. From here it is southbound all the way through Via de Evitamiento and Panamericana Sur until Puente Atocongo. Here El Chino is leaving the Panamericana in order to pass through Villa El Salvador on its way to its end stop at Avenida Lima at the far end of Villa El Salvador on the district limit with Villa Maria.

NO02 Ancon-Surco “La Sesosa”

The light blue Ruta Recomendable is La Sesosa. Its code is NO02 and it is running between Ancon and Surco, following the Panamericana Norte until Avenida Ugarte, after that following the avenidas Salaverry, Ejercito and Angamos. The last stop is UPC in Monterrico. I once took La Sesosa from UPC to Ancon on a Sunday morning and it took 2,5 hours.

La Sesosa is great for traveling north from Miraflores. But it is also good for traveling to the airport from Miraflores. One would have to transfer at Av Sanchez Carrion (Pershing) to take the IO06 towards the airport. The transfer at this point involves less walking then the transfer at Av Brasil with Javier Prado or the transfers at Av Arequipa (blue line OM23) with Javier Prado and the Via Expresa (Metropolitano) with Javier Prado. So I usually prefer to take La Sesosa, even though it might seem to be a bit of a detour.

OM23 Callao-Callao

The dark blue line, the OM23, is an important Ruta Recomendable, because it connects Miraflores to Centro de Lima through avenidas Larco, Arequipa, Wilson and Tacna. Together with the Metropolitano this is the most direct route to Centro the Lima as explained here. If I would have to guess which is the most likely combi route among the Rutas Recomendables that tourists will use, it is this one.

The OM23 line can be recognized by its light-blue buses, with bright stripes in orange, yellow and dark blue. This line should not be confused with the IO20 route, which also has light blue buses. OM23 is a Ruta Recomendable, IO20 not. The difference is in the approach to fleet renovation. The owners of OM23 are pursuing a commendable progamme of accelerated fleet renovation.
